A 21-year-old worker from Cover Hardware Shop in Esigodini, Zimbabwe, reportedly committed suicide by hanging when he failed to account for the company's 81 bags of cement that went missing while he was on duty.
The incident occurred on Sunday night.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele said Wellington Sibanda who stayed at the workers' cottages behind the hardware shop is believed to have committed suicide over the missing bags of cement, which he failed to account when the explanation was sought from him.
"On 8 September about 3pm, the manager of Cover Hardware, Christancia Nungu (29) summoned Sibanda and asked him to account for 81 bags of cement, which were missing. Sibanda failed to account for them," said Insp Ndebele.
He said after work, Sibanda went to the servants quarters troubled by the issue of the missing cement.
"On the same day at about 8.30pm, Sibanda retired to bed. However, the following morning he was found hanging from the roof in his room by his workmate, Vivian Ncube (42)," said Insp Ndebele.
The body was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem.
Insp Ndebele said investigations into the matter were in progress.
He advised members of the public not to resort to committing suicide when facing problems but should seek counselling from community and church leaders.
