An eighth-grader in the US fatally shot himself at his Detroit-area middle school Thursday just before the start of classes, police said.
The unidentified male student at Davidson Middle School in Southgate was found in a bathroom by another student around 8:15 a.m.
Police said he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, and had used a .40-caliber handgun, according to ABC affiliate WXYZ.
He was taken to Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Trenton, where he died. An exact age of the victim was not available.
“This was an isolated incident with just that student,” Southgate Community School District Superintendent Bill Grusecki said at a news conference.
A suicide note retrieved by authorities may shed light on what drove him to take his own life.
While Grusecki said the boy was “somewhat popular,” some students told The Southgate News-Herald that he was depressed and was being bullied. One student claimed he said he wanted to take his own life.
There were also reports that his parents may have been going through a divorce.
Police locked down the school temporarily before parents were asked to pick up their children around 9:15 a.m. Classes were canceled for Friday and will resume Monday.
“It got pretty emotional with the adults. They need a lot of support right now,” Grusecki said. “We could see it in their faces. It was difficult for all of us.”
Police are determining who owned the gun and how the student obtained it.
