A 27-year-old woman in India committed suicide allegedly because she was being taunted for giving birth to a girl.
Pinky Chavda hanged herself at her Bhaskar apartments in Vijay Nagar of Nalasopara (east) on Thursday night.
Minutes before committing the act, she called her mother Shanta Jadhav informing that she was taking the extreme step.
Jadhav, a resident of Bhayander rushed to her daughter's home, broke open the door to find her hanging.
The victim did not leave behind a suicide note.
Jadhav in her police complaint named Pinky's husband Rajesh (33).
She said that Rajesh had been taunting Pinky for giving birth to a girl a few months back.
The victim had reportedly confided in her mother that Rajesh used to assault her ever since the child was born, said investigating officer Parshuram Londhe.
A case under section 306 ( abetment of suicide) and 498 (A) (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against Rajesh.
No arrest has been made.
