A 47-year-old man from Chivhu, Zimbabwe, allegedly fatally struck his girlfriend with an axe following a misunderstanding over his proposal to marry her, police confirmed.

"I can confirm that police in Masvingo have arrested a man in connection with a case of murder involving him and his girlfriend. He is in custody and would appear in court soon facing charges of murder," he said.
According to sources on the fateful day,Edmore Matajira of Manzvimbo Village under Chief Manyane in Chivu travelled to Gutu to see Mukaro who was his long-time girlfriend with the intention of taking her to his aunt so that they could formalise their relationship.
"Matajira went to Mukaro's homestead in Gutu. Upon arrival he ordered his girlfriend to pack her clothes so that they can go together to Chivhu for marriage procedures to which she denied. Mukaro is said to have had initially agreed to marry Matajira," said the source.
The source added that Mukaro refused to give in to Matajira's idea after which a misunderstanding ensued between the two.
When Mukaro refused to pack her clothes, Matajira pleaded with her but to no avail.
"This led to Matajira picking up a stone and fatally striking the woman on the head before he disappeared from the scene. Mukaro sustained a deep cut on the head and died on the spot," said the source.
A report was made to the police and a manhunt was launched leading to Matajaira's arrest.
Insp Zhanero said police attended the scene and took the body to Gutu Mission Hospital for postmortem.
