A till operator and a security guard at a Bulawayo supermarket have been sentenced to perform 240 hours of community service for stealing groceries from the shop.

Patience Mapako (24) would deliberately not enter some items on till slips while her accomplice Brenda Phiri (46) who was manning the exit door, would let the customers go with the goods.

The customers would have paid for the goods but some of the items would not reflect on the till slips while Mapako and Phiri would steal the money and convert it to their own use.

Mapako, of Tshabalala and Phiri of Old Lobengula pleaded guilty to theft when they appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Ms Marilyn Mutshina yesterday.

The two were sentenced to 12 months in prison of which four months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

Two months were suspended on condition that each of them restitutes Superstar Supermarket the sum of $47, being the value of goods that were not recovered.

The remaining six months were commuted to community service and Mapako would perform 240 hours at Masuku Primary School in Sizinda while Phiri, whose security company Top View Security was contracted by the shop, would be at Magwegwe Primary School.

Asked why they committed the offence, Mapako and Phiri were adamant, saying they did not know what happened despite having pleaded guilty.

Miss Tarisai Mutarisi for the State said on Friday Mapako and Phiri hatched a plan to steal from their employer by means of not entering some items and letting them out of the shop without checking till slips.

The two ran out of luck when one customer argued with Phiri at the exit door over a till slip which Phiri had taken and not given back to her.

The argument drew the attention of the shop manager who checked the till slip and discovered that some of the items had not been entered.

An investigation into the transactions done by Mapako showed that she had on 19 instances deleted some items before printing the slips.

A video footage from the Closed Circuit Television in the shop showed that customers would have paid for the items and went away with them.

The total value stolen was $100.48 and some of the goods were recovered. A report was made to the police leading to Mapako and Phiri's arrest.
