One person died after a car accelerated into crowds of beach goers in one of the most popular boardwalks in Los Angeles.
A further 11 people were wounded, several critically, as a man drove a black Dodge across a pavement and into the Venice Beach boardwalk before speeding off.
Families and couples were sent scrambling for cover as they tried to jump out of the car's path in an incident captured on CCTV.
Witnesses described a scene of horror on the US seafront.
'It was blocks and blocks of people just strewn across the sidewalk,' Louisa Hodge, 35, said.
Los Angeles police said the driver had been pictured parking his car and admiring the sunset for several minutes before suddenly accelerating into pedestrians.
A man has handed himself in to police in Santa Monica in connection with the incident and is helping detectives with their enquiries, but it is not certain whether he is the driver.
