A MAN from Bulawayo's Nketa suburb stole 310kg bags of mealie-meal worth $170 from his employer so that he could sell the loot and raise money to pay rent, a magistrate heard.

Bulawayo magistrate Gladmore Mushove heard how on the evening of December 14, Tutsirayi Chimbadzwa, 42, sneaked into his employer's warehouse and stole several bags of mealie-meal. Chimbadzwa however, ran out of luck when an identified employee spotted him while in the process of loading the loot into a taxi and tipped off police.

Prosecuting, Portia Mhlanga told the court that Chimbadzwa stole four bags of 50kg mealie-meal, four bags of 20kg and three 10kg bags from UniFoods Company's warehouse.

"Acting on the tip-off, Mpumelelo Ndlovu, a police officer followed Chimbadzwa's taxi and intercepted him as he was in the process of offloading the stolen mealie-meal at his house," said Mhlanga.

On being quizzed, Chimbadzwa failed to give a satisfactory answer leading to his arrest.

When the magistrate asked him why he committed the offence, Chimbadzwa responded: "I wanted to sell the mealie-meal so that I could raise enough money to pay my rent and feed my family. I am sorry Your Worship."

The magistrate convicted Chimbadzwa on his own plea of guilty to theft and sentenced him to six months in jail.

Two months were conditionally suspended for three years while the remaining four months were further suspended on condition that Chimbadzwa performs 140 hours of community service at Nkulumane Police Station.
