Angry residents stoning a troubled man also beat him up with sjamboks and sticks and some were determined to finish him off.
He was accused of breaking into a house and stealing a pair of Adidas trainers.
His mother Nomisile Madonci (54) from Holomisa township in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape, however pleaded with the angry mob saying "Please don't kill my son."
Residents listened to the mum's pleas because they said they respected her.
"She is a woman of God and we respect her," they said.
Nomisile told Daily Sun she knows her son is a troublemaker.
"When the crowd wanted to kill him, I fell on my knees and prayed to God to save him.
"He's a sinner but I'm not ready to let him die. And if he dies, I won't be able to bury him because I'm unemployed. I want him to be kept in jail until he realises that crime does not pay," she said.
She said she is a woman of God and her son is breaking her heart.
"I thank my neighbours for listening to me when I pleaded with them not to kill him. The dagga he is smoking makes him a bad boy," she cried.
One of the angry residents said: "This dog must thank his mum. We wanted to get rid of him because he has been breaking into our homes for many years."
Warrant Officer Marianette Olivier told Daily Sun: "A man (22) was rescued by the cops after being assaulted by angry residents.
"He was rushed to hospital with severe injuries. He is facing charges of stolen property."
