When a thief was caught red-handed trying to steal from a house in Block F, Thohoyandou, in Limpopo, SA last Saturday, the owners alerted community members.
They caught up with the alleged thief and beat him up.
Block F is one of the crime hotspots in the area and residents say they are tired of losing their valuables to thugs.
The angry community members stripped the man of his clothes and hit him with anything they could lay their hands on, including stones.
The man begged for his life and even promised to take the community members to a spot where he and his accomplices have been hiding their loot.
"He is one of the thugs who has been burning muthi to make his victims go into a deep sleep. Then they clean out your house," said a resident.
The thief's accomplice was lucky and escaped with his life but the unconscious man was taken to a local hospital by paramedics, where he later died.
Residents who spoke on condition of anonymity said they were getting tired of crime in the area.
"People are being attacked and mugged every day.
"As if that was not enough, these thugs are gaining confidence. They target people in their homes, which leaves us with no choice but to fight back," said another local.
Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo said they have arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with the murder. He was granted R500 bail.
"He will appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrates Court on 28 August facing a murder charge," said Malelo.
On Friday and Saturday three people were attacked with knives and robbed of their cellphones and cash not far from where the suspected thief was beaten.
