Two men have been arrested in connection with the death of a man killed by residents of Evaton, near Sebokeng, after he was accused of snatching a bag, police said on Wednesday.
"The deceased was accused by a group of people for snatching a bag of an unknown lady. He was assaulted and died on the scene," said Captain Augustinah Selepe.
The man's death on Tuesday led to the arrest of two community members. They faced a charge of murder.
"Shortly after the incident, two suspects were arrested by [the] SA Police Service. Investigations are ongoing to trace and arrest more suspects," said Selepe.
The two, aged 38 and 45, were expected to appear in the Sebokeng Magistrate's Court on Friday.
Selepe urged communities not to take the law into their own hands when they apprehended criminals.
"As police, we urge members of the community to desist from taking the law into their own hands. We condemn the senseless killing of suspects and encourage people to have faith in the law enforcement agencies and report criminal activities to police," she said.
This was the second incident in less than a week involving mob justice in Gauteng.
On Monday, two Soweto robbers were severely assaulted by residents of Jabulani when they tried to rob a 37-year-old man walking from the Inhlazane railway station.
