An alleged thief, only known as Jonathan, was beaten to a pulp by angry residents at Browns Farm in Phillipi, Cape Town.
He and two friends were apparently caught stealing a woman’s cellphone.
His friends ran away from the angry crowd.
Jonathan lay in the sun for hours as the public called for him to be set alight.
However he narrowly escaped death after an ambulance came and took him to hospital.
A day later, Kanana residents, in Gugulethu, burned an alleged robber to death.
Eli Rhaqa 18, was caught after allegedly trying to rob a woman of her handbag.
She screamed when Eli reportedly stabbed her on the arm.
A woman who identified herself as Yoliswa said the woman came rushing to her house.
“She was screaming and the thief was running after her. I called for help and people came out in numbers,’’ she said.
“When they caught him, they showed the guy no mercy. He was beaten and set alight. People are just tired of being robbed.”
Police spokesman Colonel Thembinkosi Kinana confirmed Eli’s death.
“Police found the body of the deceased person allegedly burnt by a group of people who were no longer at the scene,’’ Kinana said.
“A murder docket has been opened. The community must stop taking the law into their own hands.
“If they suspect that any crime has been committed, we encourage them to contact the police on the CrimeStop number,” Kinana said.
