Bukelwa Mahubya (49) from Ramaphosa squatter camp, east of Johannesburg says she went outside for a minute and when she came back her son's head was on fire!
Bukelwa believes vutha (a fire which leaps like a grasshopper from target to target and sent by those who wish evil to befall their enemies) caused her son's death.
She told Daily Sun that she was preparing breakfast with her son, Mzukisi Takota (34), who was an epileptic.
She said she went outside to rinse the mugs and when she came back, she found Mzukisi on the floor in the dining room. His head was covered in flames.
She dropped the mugs and rushed to him but the fire was fast spreading over his body. "I struggled to drag him out because he was heavy. But I knew I couldn't let him burn to death. By the time I managed to get him out, his whole body was on fire," she said.
Bukelwa said she didn't know what started the fire "because the only electric appliance that was on was the kettle. It was in the kitchen while the incident happened in the dining-room".
Bukelwa said her neighbours came to help her put out the fire.
Reiger Park police spokesman Sergeant Mashudu Phathela said an arson case was opened.
An inquest docket was opened after Mzukisi died in hospital.
