A man in South Africa stood in the middle of a passage at the busy Bara taxi rank in Soweto and poured a bottle of petrol over himself and then he struck a match and burst into flames.
Bara taxi rank security manager, Tankiso Letsoela (37) told Daily Sun they have no idea who the man is.
"We couldn't believe it when the handsome young man was suddenly surrounded by flames," said Tankiso.
"We don't know who he is or what caused him to do this. He tried to talk but his lips were badly burnt and we couldn't hear what he was trying to say."
As taxi drivers put out the flames with fire extinguishers, commuters took pictures.
Tankiso said they called the ambulance and the police but neither of them arrived.
"A man ran to the Baragwanath Hospital and got a wheelchair to push him to the hospital.
"It looked as if the man was smiling and he had a plaster cast on his right leg.
"He managed to walk to the wheelchair and sat down," said Tankiso.
"We hope his family knows where he is. We are hoping that he is still alive."
Diepkloof police spokeswoman Captain Nondumiso Mpantsha said no case has been opened.
Mpantsha asked that people who witnessed the incident must go to the police station to report the matter.
Spokesman for Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital, Nkosiyethu Mazibuko confirmed that a burnt male was booked in yesterday morning.
"We will release more information once the family has been notified," he said.
