The cryptic death of a Canadian tourist who was found dead in a hotel roof water tank was declared an accident.
Theories of foul play festered after Elisa Lam's corpse was discovered Feb. 19 above the Cecil Hotel near Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles.
But Lt. Larry Dietz of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office confirmed to the Daily News that her death by drowning was in fact accidental.
Before Elisa Lam was found, visitors to the Cecil Hotel had complained of weak water pressure and peculiar-tasting water.
Lam, who suffered from bipolar disorder, was on vacation in California from her home in Vancouver, British Columbia. She arrived Jan. 27 and was last seen at the hotel Jan. 31.
The speculation surrounding the 21-year-old’s death was largely fueled by surveillance footage of Lam acting strangely in a hotel elevator.
The video went viral and attracted interest in the case, especially in Canada and China.
Authorities previously searched the roof but did not think to check the water tanks.
A hotel worker finally found her body when he was sent to check the 8-foot-tall water tank. The tourist's decomposing body was stewing in the very water that was funneled down to hotel rooms.
After hearing this, hotel guests who drank the peculiar-tasting water felt sick to their stomachs.
