Doctor fined over person, donkey's death
A Masvingo Hospital based medical doctor has been fined $300 or six months for culpable homicide following an accident which caused the death of one person and a donkey.
Gokwe magistrate, Shepard Mjanja sentenced Julius Chiringwa to four months in prison.
One month was suspended for three years on condition of good behaviour and three months were converted to cash leaving him with an option of paying a fine.
Chiringwa pleaded guilty to the charge. Mandla Ndlovu for the State told the court that on 16 June, Chiringwa was driving an Isuzu truck along the Gokwe-Kwekwe road with four passengers.
On reaching the 90km peg, Chiringwa's vehicle hit a donkey drawn cart and two people who were in the cart were thrown off.
One of the donkeys died on the spot. The vehicle veered off the road to the left and overturned before landing on its wheels.
One passenger died on the spot while three others were injured and ferried to Kwekwe Hospital. The doctor escaped unhurt.
The matter was reported to the police and Chiringwa was charged with culpable homicide.
