A surf instructor once beloved for his work with children and beach cleanup has been arrested for secretly filming young girls changing and pursuing them for sex.
Police in Santa Cruz, Calif., say a search warrant of the home and workplace of Dylan Greiner, 38, uncovered thousands of videos and photos taken at his surf school's changing room and beaches.
The disturbing allegations comes after two teens, aged 13 and 14, told police that Greiner lured them to his surf school before making sexual advances and taking inappropriate pictures of them.
"Information shows Mr. Greiner has been pursuing inappropriate relationships with young girls for at least the past 4 years," a report by the Santa Cruz police department reads. "He would coax with them with free surf lessons and/or employment at his business."
Among the youngest girls seen in his footage taken on beaches are 8 years old, with his camera focused on inappropriate places, according to police.
Greiner, who has operated the Santa Cruz Surf School for the last four years, was arrested late Friday night for lewd and lascivious acts with children.
With police having to sift through thousands of photos and videos taken of young girls, they say there's chance more victims will come forward leading to additional charges.
When investigators arrived to serve a search warrant of his home authorities reported encountering a 14-year-old girl as well as roommates at the property. It wasn't made known if they knew of his accused crimes.
Prior to his arrest, Greiner was known as a kind of local hero through his work in beach cleanup.
Greiner publicly tackled the issue of needles left on beaches in videos that successfully raised the community's awareness of the ongoing problem, leading to strengthened cleanups and attention to a needle exchange program.
"That wasn't a bad thing for the community in that it spurred a great conversation," Clark told Mercury News. "Unfortunately, his video skills didn't stop there."
A website formerly belonging to Greiner's surfing school has since been "suspended."
A Facebook page belonging to Greiner shows photos of him engaged in surf lessons with several children of the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Cruz in March.
That page has seen been populated with comments from the general public slamming him as a "predator" "monster" and "pedophile," among other names. Some threaten his safety in jail or out.
Greiner is currently being held on $500,000 bail after a successful increase request by police detectives.
Authorities say he has since penned apology letters to the victims and community for his actions, neither of which were shared with the general public.
