A FIRST-YEAR female student at Midlands State University (MSU) died while two of her colleagues sustained injuries after they were hit by a pick-up truck's canopy, which flew off while the vehicle was in motion last week. Police identified the student as Pauline Mudehwe whose age and residential address were not given at the time of going to Press, but is from Harare.
She was doing History and Developmental Studies.
Police said the accident occurred when the students were on their way to the university campus.
Acting police spokesperson for Midlands province Assistant Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said Mudehwe succumbed to the injuries she sustained last week on Monday while admitted to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals where she had been transferred to.
"The incident had occurred on 19 April when the now deceased, Pauline Mudehwe together with her two other friends, Patience Chitsaka and Debrah Hundi were hit by a canopy of a vehicle, which flew off a moving vehicle near the university campus," said Asst Insp Mahoko.
He said the three who sustained injuries were rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital by a university ambulance. Chitsaka and Hundi were treated and discharged while Mudehwe who sustained serious injuries was later transferred to Parirenyatwa. Her condition deteriorated resulting in her death on Monday," said Asst Insp Mahoko.
He said the driver of the vehicle has since been arrested and was now facing a charge of culpable homicide.
Meanwhile, MSU acting public relations director Ms Sinikiwe Tirivanhu said the university was saddened by the tragic death of Mudehwe.
In a statement, Ms Tirivanhu said the incident had disturbed the entire university staff and students.
"The Midlands State University is saddened by the accident that claimed the life of one of our students, Pauline Mudehwe. Pauline was a level one semester one student in the department of Development Studies. Pauline got involved in an accident on the morning of 19 of April 2012 when she was walking to school with her two friends, Patience Chitsaka (Surveying and Geometrics Level 2:1) and Debrah Hundi (Development Studies Level 1:1), when a canopy flew from a moving vehicle and hit her resulting in her sustaining a fractured spine, according to the provisional diagnosis made at the hospital.
She eventually died on the 30th of April 2012 in Harare where she had been transferred," she said.
Ms Tirivanhu said the vehicle that was involved in the accident belonged to a student at the university.
"The driver of the car whose canopy hit Pauline is a student in the Department of Telecommunications. The other two students who were also injured in the same accident were treated and discharged the following morning, after being detained overnight for observation at the university clinic.
The Vice-Chancellor and the entire university community convey their sincere heartfelt condolences to the Mudehwe family on the passing on of their daughter, Pauline. May her dear soul rest in peace," said Ms Tirivanhu.
