POLICE have named five of the seven Dynamos fans who died in an accident along the Harare-Bulawayo Road on Saturday. Police said two of the fans, who were on their way to Gweru for a Castle Lager Premier League match between Dynamos and Chapungu, are yet to be identified by their relatives. National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba identified the five as Last Nezandonyi, 29, Peter Maemba, 34, Prince Nheweyembwa, 34, Mahwupete Rukudzo, 43, and Spencer Gwasira, 50.
The deceased, believed to be part of the club’s fans from its Harare chapter, died after the Iveco bus they were travelling in burst its rear tyre, veered off the road and rolled three times before landing on its side at the 173KM peg between Kadoma and Kwekwe near ZRP Battlefields.
The supporters were going to the Glamour Boys’ match against Chapungu in Gweru which DeMbare won 1-0. Snr Asst Comm Charamba urged people who are missing their relatives to visit Kwekwe General Hospital mortuary.
She urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is deeply concerned with the loss of lives in road accidents. We are urging motorists to avoid speeding and to exercise caution when travelling,” said Snr Asst Comm Charamba.
Meanwhile, tragedy struck twice in one family as the death toll in the accident that claimed the lives of Dynamos supporters rose to eight yesterday after another casualty, Galelio Tinashe Muchemwa, succumbed to injuries at Parirenyatwa Hospital.
Muchemwa, 22, was transferred to the hospital on Saturday with head injuries after he was involved in a tragic accident along the Harare-Bulawayo Road near Battlefields in Kadoma when a vehicle they were travelling in burst its rear tyre and overturned. His half brother, Spencer Gwasira, was among the seven people who died on the sport. And yesterday, as the family was preparing to leave for their rural home in Mrehwa for Gwasira’s death, a phone call was received alerting them of the depressing news.
