TWENTY-THREE people escaped death yesterday afternoon when a Honda Fit and Toyota Hiace kombi collided at the intersection of Nketa Drive and Hyde Park road in Bulawayo’s Mpopoma suburb.
Traffic lights at the intersection of the two roads were not functioning at the time of the accident due to a power cut in the area.
The Honda fit, which had seven people on board including the driver, was going towards Tshabalala suburb along Nketa drive while the kombi , which had up to 18 passengers, was going into town from Pumula suburb.
One passenger in the kombi and the driver of the Honda Fit were seriously injured. The total number of those who were injured from both the kombi and the pirate taxi, which had no registration numbers, could not be ascertained.
Tafara Mawodza, who witnessed the accident, said the driver of the Honda Fit failed to give way at the intersection.
“He was speeding. He lost control of the vehicle and smashed into the kombi causing it to roll three times landing on its side. The kombi was coming from Pumula going to town,” said Mawodza.
The Honda Fit plies the Mpopoma-Sizinda route.
Last week, a student teacher at Hillside Teachers College was killed and four other people were injured when a pirate taxi collided with a Toyota Hiace at the intersection of 12th Avenue extension and Park Road in Suburbs.
