A Mzilikazi man defied all odds and applied for the termination of his customary marriage with estranged wife he last saw 30 years ago.
Norman Sibanda left the Bulawayo court in shock yesterday when he pleaded with Magistrate Victor Mpofu to terminate his marriage anyways as he had failed to locate his wife who disappeared from their home in 1983.
He narrated his ordeal to the court, claiming that Opa Masuku had for the past 30 years proved that their relationship was beyond repair.
"I got married to this woman on November, 20 in 1979 and everything went well. However in 1983 she disappeared into thin air and that was the last I saw of her. I need this court to grant me divorce because it has been 30 years since I saw my wife. I have tried locating her everywhere and all her relatives whom I knew have passed on," said Sibanda.
He also said the union had irretrievably broken down and there were no prospects of restoration to a normal relationship.
"Your worship I do not know where this woman and I asked the police to deliver the summons at House Number J53 Mzilikazi. I am therefore appealing that you grant me the divorce because we have irreconcilable differences which render continuance of the relationship impossible," he said.
Magistrate Mpofu however declined granting him the divorce and advised him to first cross check if Masuku was alive as he had last communicated him her decades ago.
"The plaintiff is hereby adviced to process for substituted service and advertise with the local press so we ascertain if the respondent is still alive," said Mpofu.
