A man from Gwanda area severely assaulted his pregnant wife accusing her of attending the funeral of her ex-husband's sister.

Ms Sibekezele Mlotshwa (38) was beaten by Jonathan Kundidzora (37) whom she had been co-habiting with for the past two years.

Kundidzora appeared before Gwanda magistrate Sheila Nazombe facing an assault charge.

The court heard that on Sunday Mlotshwa attended a funeral, when she came back, Kundidzora assaulted her with fists and kicked her in the stomach.

Ms Mlotshwa then fled from her home to seek refuge from her brother, Mr Alfred Ncube of 1181 Phakama suburb, one of the people that had given Miss Mlotshwa the go ahead to attend the funeral as she had a son from that previous marriage.

"My brother Mr Ncube accompanied me back home and tried to reason with my husband on the issue but he (Mr Kundidzora) left before the  discussion could be finished,” Ms  Mlotshwa told the court.

“That is when my brother indicated that he would go with me to his place since things were not well. While on our way to my brother's house, we met my husband and that is when he started punching and kicking me saying he wanted to terminate my pregnancy as he was the one responsible. He was querying as to where I was going with the pregnancy that belonged to him."

Angered by Mr Ncube’s intervention, Mr Kundidzora who is said to have been armed with an empty beer bottle, turned to Mr Ncube and assaulted him using the bottle, the court was told.

He sustained a deep cut on his left hand.

Ms Mlotshwa sustained internal injuries.

However, Mr Kundidzora pleaded not guilty to physically abusing his wife and to assaulting his brother-in-law.

He said he admitted that he had not allowed his wife to go the funeral as it was against their custom.

“In our Shona culture once a woman has re-married, she should not go back to the people she was previously married to,” said Mr Kundidzora.

He said he only pushed away Mr Ncube as he held him by the throat and threatened to kill him.

“Your worship, my wife and her relatives are telling lies before the court. I just have a feeling that they are up to fixing me,” said Mr Kundidzora.

The magistrate Ms Nazombe remanded Mr Kundidzora out of custody to tomorrow.
