Pello Rabase (44) tried to break up a fight and was stabbed to death in the process.
The drama started after his sister Mangaka (30) asked a family friend, Tefo Mosia, to give her R20 ($2) to buy a bottle of beer.
Mangaka said: "I ran out of beer at a local tavern.
"I went over to Tefo who was with two friends. I asked him to buy me beer and he gave me R20.
"At the counter, the bar tender told me they were closed. I went back and asked them to walk me home. I told Tefo he would get his money the next day.
"As we were approaching my house, one of his friends demanded the R20 Tefo gave me. I told him that the R20 deal was none of his business.
"An argument started and my brother Pello heard the commotion.
"He came outside and tried to calm us down.
"But the friend pulled out a butcher's knife and stabbed him to death."
Police spokesman Captain Stephen Thakeng said: "A case of murder was registered and a 22-year-old man was arrested.
"He will appear in the Bothaville Magistrates Court to face a murder charge."
