34-year-old Monde Mkhwanazi from Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni, South Africa said he went to his local Cashbuild shop to buy a lock, but ended up being humiliated when one of the banknotes he paid with was found to be fake.
Speaking to Daily Sun about his ordeal, Monde said: "The cashier said I had paid with a fake R10 note. I apologised and said I would go home to get more cash.
"Then some workers said they would teach me a lesson because too many people take chances. They chained me to a pole outside the shop like a criminal."
After an hour of public humiliation, an off-duty cop came past and was angered by the way Monde was being treated.
The cop said: "I ordered the staff to release the man. At first they didn't take me seriously as I wasn't wearing my uniform, but after another man told them I was a policeman, they released Monde.
"To my surprise, he phoned me later to say they had locked him up in the storeroom."
The Daily Sun spoke to Monde while he was in the storeroom.
He said, "My foot is chained to a table and they said they can keep me here as long as they want."
He was released at about 5pm but was not assaulted.
