A 15-year-old girl from Mkoba Suburb was buried alive at Gweru's Mkoba Village 9 Cemetery following a misunderstanding with two women suspects over a dress, the police have confirmed.
The incident occurred on Tuesday last week at about 8.35 pm.
Midlands police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, said on that day, the 15-year old complainant had a misunderstanding with two suspects, Family Shorai (20) and another 17-year old girl over a dress.
"Apparently, the 15-year old complainant had borrowed a dress from one of the suspects. The suspects came demanding their dress and a misunderstanding ensued. The suspects started assaulting the 15-year old girl with open hands and later force-marched her to Mkoba 9 Cemetery," he said.
Insp Mahoko said while at Mkoba 9 Cemetery, the two suspects dug a pit up to the chest level of the complainant and forced the girl into it.
Shorai and her 17-year old accomplice went away leaving the complainant stuck in her ‘grave' with only her head above the ground.
"The girl was spotted by a passerby who then helped her to get out of the pit. The passerby spotted the complainant 30 minutes after the two suspects had left.
"The matter was reported to the police who attended to the scene. The two suspects were arrested. The matter is being investigated as attempted murder.
"Shorai and her accomplice realised there was a possibility their action could cause harm or even death to the complainant but went ahead with their action, hence the attempted murder charge," said Insp Mahoko.
The Midlands police spokesperson appealed to members of the public to always seek third party interventions to solve disputes.
