Two men, aged 27 and 48, were caught by security guards about to drive out of the gates of Tembisa Hospital in Ekurhuleni, SA in a white Toyota Quantum.
Inside the car, the guards found 33 sealed boxes of various medicines.
When asked where the medicine was being taken, one of the suspects, allegedly a pharmacist, was unable to explain.
The men were arrested on the spot and the medicine was taken back to the hospital.
Warrant Officer Jan Olcker said the suspects were taken to Tembisa Police Station and a case of theft was opened against them.
"At this stage, we cannot say what kinds of medicine were in the boxes but the value is thought to be close to R300,000.
"They thought nobody was going to suspect anything because the car they were using had the municipality's emblem on it," Olcker said.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates Court.
