The 17-year-old girl from Chitungwiza who allegedly murdered her mother by stabbing her six times with a kitchen knife at the height of a domestic dispute appeared in court yesterday facing murder charges.
Chitungwiza magistrate Ms Jessy Kufa heard that on Sunday and at around 10pm, the girl allegedly had a heated argument with her mother at their house after she was found in possession of US$100.
The mother demanded an explanation as to where the girl got the money from.
The mother became angry after the girl failed to give her satisfactory answers and assaulted her several times with a cooking stick.
The court heard that in a fit of rage, the girl dashed to the kitchen where she took a knife and stabbed her mother.
The mother bled profusely, collapsed and died shortly after.
Sensing danger, the girl is alleged to have fled from the house, but came back later and sprinkled paraffin on a cloth that she had used to cover her mother's lifeless body.
After that, the girl set the cloth ablaze, burning the body in the process.
She proceeded to her room where she sprinkled more paraffin and set the house on fire in a bid to conceal the offence.
The matter was reported to the police leading to her arrest.
Appearing before Ms Kufa, the girl was not asked to plead to murder charges and was remanded in the custody of a social worker to September 16.
In remanding her, Ms Kufa said that the girl was facing a Third Schedule offence and would be tried at the High Court.
Ms Ntombikayise Nleya appeared for the State and requested that the girl undergo a medical examination.
