A 38-year-old Bulawayo man has been sentenced to an effective six months in jail for beating his wife with a bicycle chain after accusing her of infidelity.
Jabulani Ndebele arrived at his matrimonial home from a beer drink on Sunday evening and found his wife's friend and her husband fighting.
Ndebele immediately pounced on his wife Ms Trinity Moyo accusing her of allowing the couple to fight at his house.
He also accused her of being unfaithful to him, saying she knew why the couple was fighting.
Ndebele was convicted on his own plea of guilty to violating a section of the Domestic Violence Act when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Ms Eveline Mashavakure yesterday.
He however, denied using a bicycle chain, and told the court that he assaulted Ms Moyo with open hands.
Ndebele said he was infuriated as he believed that his wife could have been part of the couple's fight as he suspected that she was cheating on him.
The magistrate sentenced him to six months in prison but suspended two months for three years on condition of good behaviour.
The remaining four months were also suspended on condition that Ndebele completes 410 hours of community service at Queens Park Police Station starting this week.
Appearing before a different court, a 43-year-old man was sentenced to an effective four months in prison for assaulting his wife thereby failing to comply with a protection order that had been granted against him.
Nhlanhla Maseko, a domestic worker in Malindela was initially sentenced to 12 months in prison.
The magistrate suspended eight months for three years on condition of good behaviour.
Maseko arrived home from a beer drink on 24 August and his wife Ms Misiwe Mpofu, who is a nurse aid at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) gave him food but he refused to eat.
Instead, he started assaulting her and was restrained by some relatives.
A report was made to the police leading to Maseko's arrest.
