Benni McCarthy has joined Celtic as Neil Lennon's understudy.
Former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy's mission to embark on a coaching career has started in Scotland.
McCarthy, who hung up his boots in June this year after being with Orlando Pirates for two seasons, has been linked up with Scottish champions, Glasgow Celtic as he starts to pick up his coaching badges.
According to Celtic's supporters forum website, he will be shadowing or learning the ropes from Celtic manager Neil Lennon.
McCarthy, who is now residing in Scotland with his girlfriend, recently reunited with former mentor Jose Mourinho at Chelsea and is working his way to Uefa B coaching certification.
McCarthy's agent, Ivan Modia, was quoted in the Scottish television STV as saying: "Benni has most definitely retired. He is doing his badges.
"We spoke with Neil to see if it was OK and if he could learn at Celtic's training sessions.
"Neil said 'absolutely' and we are very happy he agreed."
McCarthy was linked with a move to Celtic during his playing career but a switch never materialised to Parkhead.
McCarthy is familiar with the Celtic manager, as he once came up against Celtic while playing for Celta Vigo in Uefa competition in the 2002/03 season.
