Sir Alex Ferguson accused David Luiz of conning referee Howard Webb to get Rafael sent off at Old Trafford.

Rafael was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Luiz, after Chelsea scored a late winner to take a giant step towards securing a Champions League place.

Juan Mata's 87th-minute goal means Chelsea will clinch a Champions League spot with victory over top-four rivals Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

But the talking point was the dismissal, with Manchester United boss Ferguson incensed by Luiz, who was caught smiling by TV cameras, before writhing around in mock agony to get Rafael sent off in the 89th minute.

"Rafael retaliates but he, Luiz, quite clearly elbows him twice then rolls about like a dying swan and that convinces the referee," said Ferguson.

"He was smiling, it's bad. What kind of professional is that?

"Rafael was elbowed and he retaliated. But that's what always happens - the player who retaliates always gets the bigger penalty, even though it was clear Luiz elbowed him twice.

"It was rash what Rafael did. He's a young lad and should know better, but retaliation never works. I wouldn't say it was violent conduct. The referee hasn't even seen it.

"I don't think he could see it at all, but he's gone with the fact that Luiz has rolled about on the floor and I think that has convinced him it was a red card.

"You see that with these European, foreign and South American players.

Chelsea interim boss Rafa Benitez said: "I didn't see the incident or replays. I am always trying to enjoy if we win, you can change nothing if you complain when you lose.

"I haven't seen it and I will not say too much. There are 200 incidents each weekend in the league."

Chelsea host Spurs, knowing a win will take them six points clear of them and effectively guarantee then a top four spot, given their vastly superior goal difference.

"For us, every game is massive now. We did really well and we have to beat Tottenham now, but that will not be easy.

"The goal difference is too big, so if we win we can be there, but Tottenham are a good team, so it's a big game for both teams."
