A 26-year-old Zimbabwean domestic worker in South Africa is languishes in police custody two months after she allegedly set alight two vehicles that belonged to her lover's wife.
It is suspected that the woman set the vehicles on fire in a fit of rage after her boyfriend told her to terminate her pregnancy at Katima Mulilo.
The suspect, Svodia Tandare, employed at a house in Soweto at Katima Mulilo, blindly fell in love with a married man who concealed his marital status, taking advantage of the fact his wife was stationed out of town.
According to sources that requested anonymity, the man who cheated on his wife while she was posted out of town is employed by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.
The forestry official lured the maid into the relationship that eventually turned sour, claiming he was single and was the owner of two vehicles that his wife left in his care.
He in turn allowed the maid to drive his wife's vehicles but things turned nasty when the wife returned unexpectedly to Katima Mulilo and also at a time when the domestic worker discovered she was pregnant.
According to police sources, who confirmed her plight, the forestry official used to pamper her with gifts while also allowing her to drive his wife's two cars.
Things went awry when the man out of fear of repercussions from his wife, eventually told the domestic worker to terminate the pregnancy as he also confirmed his true marital status and that the pregnancy could ruin his marriage.
Out of rage, Tandare who apparently felt used, set alight the bakkie and a car that her lover had falsely claimed were his property.
She has been denied bail at the Katima Mulilo Magistrate's Court and continues to languish in police custody. She will appear in court on June 21 for plea and trial.
