A Zanu PF member is reported to have said the PM, Morgan Tsvangirai should never expect any position coverage on state media - instead he should start his own newspapers.
Defending the much-criticised stance by state media to cover Tsvangirai only in negative light, Goodson Nguni said the former trade union leader should form his own newspapers if he wanted positive coverage.
"Let the prime minister start his own papers if the state media is not covering him," he said.
He accused the privately-owned media of ignoring corruption in the MDC, while attacking Zanu PF.
Nguni was responding to opposition leader Simba Makoni of Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn (MKD) who had castigated the state media for vilifying Tsvangirai.
Since the formation of the troubled coalition government, Tsvangirai and ministers from his MDC party have received little coverage from state-run media. Where the media houses carry stories about Tsvangirai, his ministers and programmes, these stories are always in negative light.
"The media must inform the people of what is happening in the country and it must cover everyone," Makoni said.
John Makumbe, a political analyst based at the University of Zimbabwe, said the media should expose corruption and "dictatorship", which he said had ruined the country.
"We have gone through 32 years of dictatorship and it is the role of the media to expose that. The media should show the difference between light and darkness," he said.
