William Gulwa, 60, from Tshwane, South Africa was overjoyed when he won more than R19 million on the Lotto.
But instead of being a wealthy man, he has lost his ticket and and R30 000 that he gave to a sangoma.
Gulwa had seen the traditional healer because of his backache.
The healer also said he could help him win the Lotto.
“The sangoma told me to buy five Lotto tickets and bring them to him,” said William.
He didn’t win but the sangoma said he shouldn’t give up.
“This time he told me to buy four tickets – and this time I hit the jackpot,” said William.
“I took the ticket to my sangoma. He took the ticket and told me to bring R30 000 so that we could celebrate and thank the ancestors.”
William, knowing that he would soon be a very rich man, didn’t hesitate. He took multiple loans to get the money.
However when he went back for the celebration, the sangoma had gone to KZN and the healer’s female partner said she could help but it would cost another R50 000!
William eventually decided to report the sangoma to the police.
Gidani spokeswoman, Thembi Tulwana, confirmed that indeed the jackpot amount for 26 September 2012 was R19 680 776 and there was a winner but she said the ticket was not tampered with.
Tulwana said a person who believes his winning ticket has been stolen should open a case with the police because it is theft.
He must also contact Gidani, who will be able to identify certain features of the ticket to indicate that it had been changed.
Nigel cop spokesman Warrant Officer Madeleine von Wielligh said a case of theft was being investigated by the Nigel Crime Investigation Department.
