A prisoner and winner of the 2015 season of Starbrite in the non-singing category, Kudzi Nyoka has been handed over her prizes which include a G-tel tablet, a regency hotel holiday voucher for two, a mobile handset, vouchers and prize money.
Nyoka, a poet, who is an inmate at Chikurubi female prison only discovered her talent when she was put behind bars.
Speaking during the officially handed over of her prize, Nyoka thanked the organisers of the event for recognising her talent.
She said she will pursue her career as a poet and a writer, something she only discovered while in prison.
Starbrite’s works have not gone unnoticed with the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services Commissioner General Paradzai Zimondi acknowledging its role in preparing inmates for time after release.
"The crime rates in Zimbabwe could be reduced. For the inmates, their confidence will be boosted hence a vision of a brighter future off the prison," he said.
Talented people must be supported as a way of curbing and minimising crime, noted Starbrite Executive Director, Barney Mpariwa.
Starbrite has partnered with the Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services (ZPCS) since 2013.
