THEMBISO Primary School of Bulawayo were last week crowned the National Association of Primary Heads (NAPH) national choral music champions for the first time at a contest held at the Centenary Park Amphitheatre.
In a journey that started a month ago at cluster competitions beating all the schools in Luveve, Thembiso proceeded to the district finals in Khami were they triumphed over all the schools before walloping stiff competitors in the provincial finals.
Last week Thursday, representatives from all the country's ten provinces gathered to showcase their prowess in singing the competition piece in a show that was graced by Mayor of Bulawayo, Councillor Martin Moyo, who was Guest of Honour. Schools from other provinces gave a good account of themselves in the competition song which was in Ndebele. In his speech, Councillor Moyo urged schools to encourage children's participation in the arts. "
Heads of schools are encouraged to continue working hard to encourage children's participation in the arts because the arts have become an industry and not a pastime."
Provincial Education Director, Dan Moyo, also present, said he could not hide his delight at the win by Thembiso in a province that is largely success starved in most schools competitions.
There were hugs and dancing when the results were announced. Matabeleland North came second and in third place was Mashonaland Central.
For their effort Thembiso went away with $1000, a shield and a further personal award of a trophy and R 1000 from the composer of the competition piece.
