When Gamuchirai Nhengu first appeared on the music scene she was 18 and on X Factor.
Although the talented singer did not make the live shows, the media exposure resulted in her family's visa status being questioned.
Gamu commented: 'In the middle of the show, my visa needed renewing, which is something that was quite expected. So it was just a small matter that we went court to fix and we went court for like 5mins and there were journalists who were expecting to hear a story of benefit fraud or something but we were there 5 mins. It was nothing, which was blown out of proportion.'
Clearly an issue had been made from no issue; however an experience like this can be a hard time for anyone, especially when you're young and trying to find yourself.
Gamu added: 'It was definitely a time where I had to think about whether this was something I wanted to do, whether I wanted to go back out there again, which is probably why it has taken me two years.
'I had big offers from labels, but I also had a lot of thinking to do and growing up to do, because you have to grow up fast when things like this happen. But I had been given an opportunity so I wasn't about to let any negativity change my mind set.
'That's them winning and I'm not going to give up something that I love because of this blip, it's just something that you have to just learn to live with and just move on.'
Now 21, Gamu seems ready to take the world by storm. Her latest single, Shake the Room, out May 5th, fuses 90′s soul with contemporary RnB showing her appreciation for a particular era of music.
She commented: 'I wrote all the songs on the album and we based it all around the 1960's taking a lot of influences from Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner. I wanted to write a song that pays homage to all the artists that had inspired the album. For this particular song I just wanted to have a good old school party, taking all the modern stuff out and bringing back the old school sound'.
'I'm a lover of music, I want to experiment, I want to be the type of artist who grows, I want to evolve and develop. I'm just 21 but I see that I've grown since I was 18. I want to keep who I am but evolve it.'
