Pardoned Inmate Wrecks Havoc, Breaks Into 6 Houses

A Robber who was last week released from prison on Presidential amnesty has been re-arrested after breaking into six houses in Bulawayo’s Kumalo suburb.
Thembelani Sibanda, 27, of Mzilikazi suburb was found in possession of property stolen from different homes in the leafy suburb.
He was arrested on Monday and a police source said he was part of the over 2,000 inmates who were released on Presidential Amnesty on Africa Day.
“He had a previous conviction of robbery and was released last week on Wednesday following the Presidential pardon,” said the source.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango said Sibanda was arrested following a tip off.
“He was arrested after being linked to a series of break-ins in Kumalo suburb where he is suspected to have broken into six houses. He stole property worth about $195,” she said.
Insp Simango said some of the recovered property includes gas cylinders, empty 20 litre bucket containers and clothing.
She said people whose premises were broken into have already recovered their property.
“The property has already been positively identified by their owners. But we want to urge members of the public to adequately secure their property for the avoidance of similar incidents. They should also report any suspicious people milling around their properties,” said Insp Simango.
Sibanda is not the first pardoned prisoner to find himself in trouble, less than a week after being released.
Khupekani Sibanda, 32, was arrested last week, a day after his release from prison after he attempted to buy some clothes using counterfeit United States dollar notes.
After he was searched by the police, Khupekani had $1,200 in fake notes at a flea market near Egodini.
