Two commuter omnibuses collided head on at the intersection of Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo's street and 8th Avenue in Bulawayo yesterday, leaving one person injured.
One of the kombis overturned and several passengers escaped with bruises.
The statue site has become a black spot with numerous vehicles crashing into the balustrade.
Bulawayo’s Chief Fire Officer Richard Peterson said it was fortunate the accident was not fatal.
The government is yet to implement measures meant to reduce accidents around the area.
Safety measures were supposed to be implemented by December 22 but to date nothing has been done.
Some of the suggested measures included putting lights, painting the perimeter of the statue and attaching reflectors and constructing speed humps.
