Villagers from the diamond rich Marange areas are calling for the arrest of top government and diamond firms' officials, who deceived President Robert Mugabe and made him present a dummy cheque of $1,5 million as contribution to Zimunya Marange Community Share Ownership Trust, where only
$400 000 was later deposited and at least $1,1m is still missing.
Speaking at a public hearing conducted by the Justice Mayor Wadyajena-led Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Youth and Indigenisation to find out how communities in Chiadzwa benefited from their diamond resources, the villagers said they were shortchanged by the diamond miners.
"All of you are thieves, including our Chief Marange. You (MPs) look well fed with big stomachs and you have come to gather our opinions when the diamonds are said to be almost finished in Chiadzwa. You see, I do not even have shoes because I am poor and yet our diamonds are looted everyday," Janet Maduche said.
Anjin deputy general manager, Shingi Manyeruke distanced his company from the 15 billion missing diamonds claiming that his company has only mined diamonds worth $300 million in five years.
