Johanne Masowe members in court for attempted murder

Two members of the Johanne Masowe Apostolic Faith church have been dragged to court after they allegedly attempted to kill their colleagues on claims that they were getting more popular than them.
Edison Mukohwa, 46, and Emberai Sithole, 38, are facing attempted murder charges. They yesterday approached the High Court, seeking bail, after their earlier freedom bid hit a brick wall.
The State claims that the two attempted to murder Maxwell Mapisa, Tawanda Sabao and Tatenda Zaranyika. According to State papers, the pair drove the three men to Zvisokwe River, Mt Darwin in Mashonaland Central Province, using Peter Tabviroonane's vehicle. They allegedly attempted to drown the trio into the water, accusing them of being more popular in church.
When they first appeared before the Harare Magistrates' Courts, the duo applied for refusal of remand, which was dismissed, after further claims emerged that Mukohwa was facing a separate murder charge.
The court denied them bail on the basis that they were a flight risk and that they were likely to interfere with investigations and witnesses. In the bail application at the High Court, the pair is denying the allegations, claiming the charges were fabricated.
They said the accusations were propelled by their detractors, who had evil intentions, considering the fact that Mukohwa is the church's treasurer.
"It is not clear where these allegations stem from as they are not based by any facts or evidence," Mukohwa said.
The two told the court that they are suitable candidates for bail. Sithole said he did not even know the complainants, adding that the allegations were based on speculations.
The bail hearing was deferred to today.
