TWO brothers were arrested recently for allegedly trying to sell 58kg of mbanje with a street value of $58 000 in Bulawayo.
Samson (36) and Richard Muyambo (26) from Chief Zamuchiya area in Chipinge were intercepted at the corner of Samuel Parirenyatwa Street and 4th Avenue in a taxi driven by Mr Trevor Sibanda of New Lobengula.
The two brothers pleaded guilty to possessing mbanje when they appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Ms Gladmore Mushove this week.
They were remanded in custody to Thursday as the State said investigations were still in progress.
The magistrate denied the Muyambo brothers bail arguing that they were not good candidates as they would interfere with witnesses.
Samson and Richard told the court that they had been given the bags of mbanje to hand over to somebody in Bulawayo.
Prosecuting, Mr Kudakwashe Jaravaza said on 11 November the Muyambo brothers boarded a Zupco bus from Birchenough Bridge to Bulawayo.
They were allegedly carrying four suitcases stashed with the illegal drug. The court was told that in the bus there was a detective from the Drugs and Narcotics Section who suspected that the two were carrying illegal goods-and monitored them.
Samson and Richard alighted from the bus at Worringham and loaded the bag into a car.
This was all in the eyes of the detective who then alerted police officers manning a roadblock along the Bulawayo-Gwanda Road.
Little did Samson and Richard know that they were being monitored and they were later arrested after boarding a taxi along Samuel Parirenyatwa Street.
Police officers searched the car and recovered four suitcases stashed with mbanje in the boot.
