POLICE have arrested two men in connection with a residential stands scandal in Mutare.
Police confirmed the arrest of Wonder Elias Gapa (47), a Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing official based in Rusape, and David Kafesu of No. 150, Garikai Site Office in Mutare.
Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda said the two misrepresented to complainants that they had been authorised to sell stands in Garikai Two project.
"David Kafesu, of No. 150, Garikai Site Office, and Wonder Elias Gapa, a Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing official, whose address was given as No. 552 NHF Vengere in Rusape, have been arrested after it was alleged that they misrepresented to the complainants that they had been authorised to sell stands in Garikai Two project.
"The first complainant, Siyayi Nyarota of No. 8 Mutangadwa Road, Old Location, Sakubva, was made to pay $2 100 and was allocated Stand No. 0016 at Garikai housing project.
"Samuel Nezandoi of 113 McGregor, Sakubva, was also made to pay the same amount and was allocated Stand No. 0046 in the same area.
"However, it emerged that there are no such stands on the local authority's map. The case came to light when another complainant was made to pay$2 020 but was not given the stand and reported the case to police. The arrested duo is helping police with investigations," said Chananda.
A highly placed source told The Manica Post that some politicians, who acted out of the need to gain political mileage during the July 31 elections as well as for monetary benefits, were involved in the scandal.
"This is just the beginning of the case. We have a number of victims who were misled into believing that they have indeed been allocated stands yet in actual fact the stands were not existent at all. We are also aware of the involvement of some senior politicians in the province who will soon be named and shamed in court," said the source who declined to be named for professional reasons.
