Police in South Texas are hunting for a couple who allegedly kept an illegal border crosser shackled at their home for ten days while demanding $3,000 from his family in Honduras.
The 30-year-old man was in his underwear, shackled at the ankles and carrying a post he'd ripped out of a wall when a neighbour in the southwest Houston neighbourhood spotted him scurrying up a fence and called police around 2 p.m. Wednesday, local KHOU-TV reported.
The neighbour gave the man some clothes and some food and waited with him while authorities arrived.
The man said he'd been chained and kept as a prisoner at a home on Bexley Drive.
"He did say that for the past ten days he'd been kept there, they'd only feed him once a day," the neighbour, who didn't give his name, told KHOU-TV.
"He was nervous. He was asking if they were going to send him back. I said, 'Don't even worry about that,'" he said.
The alleged captive, who wasn't identified, said he'd trekked more than 1,000 miles from Honduras and crossed the border illegally into McAllen, Texas, where immigrant smugglers promised him opportunities in Houston.
Instead, he was kidnapped, shackled, denied food and threatened with a gun while his captors demanded his family send $3,000 for his release, the station reported.
SWAT teams stormed the home around 6 p.m. Wednesday, but found it empty.
Windows inside covered with plywood, cops said.
The suspects were described as a woman and man in his late teens. Neighbours said the couple rented the home and kept to themselves.
The alleged hostage was in the custody of federal customs agents.
Police are investigating the incident and haven't released any details about the alleged captors.
