Vabonke Biyane (33) from Kutlwanong in Odendaalsrus, Free State, says he is a prophet who received the gift of healing from God.
However he claims that he was attacked by church elders who said even though he was gifted, he was not high enough in the church to be a prophet.
The church elders allegedly tied him to a tree and beat him with a sjambok.
He said they told him that only pastors and bishops were allowed to be called prophets and heal people.
Vabonke claimed that he was beaten after being questioned about where he got his powers.
He was then taken home and after calling the cops, he was taken to hospital, where he spent two days.
"On the day of the incident they came to my house and asked me to go to church with them.
"When we got there, they tied me to a tree and two men took turns beating me with a sjambok, while the third poured water on my body.
"While they were beating me, they asked where I got my powers," he said.
"After I opened a case against the culprits, the church elders urged me to drop it.
"They said we could solve it within the church. They even offered to bribe me."
Vabonke said he had not heard anything from the cops because some of them were members of the church.
Church elder Maria Pholwana said what happened was unusual as prophets in the church usually worked together.
Cop spokesman Captain Stephen Thakeng confirmed that a case of assault has been opened and that arrests will be made soon.
