The homeless man who allegedly shoved a 21-year-old Hunter College student in front of a Metro-North train was arraigned on attempted murder charges Thursday.
Westchester County prosecutors said Howard Mickens, 39, was held without bail after the hearing in White Plains City Court.
Mickens is accused of pushing Maya Leggat into the path of an oncoming train at the White Plains station at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
He was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, according to a spokesman for the Westchester County prosecutor's office.
Police were told that Mickens, who was often seen begging for change around the White Plains Metro-North station, pushed Leggat after she refused to give him any money.
Paramedics rushed the college student, who lives in White Plains, to Westchester Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition with a mangled leg.
She also lost some fingers, according to witnesses.
"I see (Mickens) every day," White Plains station newsstand owner Gary Wexler told the Daily News Wednesday. "This is the first time he's ever done a heinous act like this."
Mickens has spent three stints in state prison totaling 11 years between 1992 and 2006 on robbery, assault and drug possession convictions, according to court records.
None of the incarcerations lasted longer than five years, records show.
He's is due back in court on Oct. 25, officials said.
