A 29-year-old taxi marshal Xolani Nxumalo from Hambanathi in Tongaat, SA, has suffered severe burns after an ex-girlfriend poured acid on him.
"Suddenly my ex-girlfriend came towards me," said Xolani.
"Without a word, she pulled out a plastic bottle and poured acid over me.
"I screamed in pain and ran around the rank looking for help."
Xolani suffered acid burns on the left side of his face and down his upper body.
Speaking from his bed at Osindisweni Hospital in Verulam, Xolani said the trouble started on Tuesday when his ex-girlfriend came to the rank with his two kids and demanded to go to his house.
"I called my girlfriend to buy groceries for the children. When I got home my ex-girlfriend was still there. I fought with her and told her she couldn't stay with me and my girlfriend.
She and the kids ended up sleeping at the police station," said Xolani.
He said his ex-girlfriend is sorry for pouring acid over him.
"She calls me every day, pleading for my forgiveness. I won't get her arrested because she is the mother of my kids. God will deal with her," said Xolani.
Xolani's current girlfriend, Nosipho Cele (20), has been with him for two years and said she will not leave him now, even with his burns.
She knew about the ex-girlfriend because they had spoken about the children.
"On Tuesday we told the ex-girlfriend to leave the kids with us and go sleep at Xolani's house nearby but she refused," she said.
Xolani's sister, Gugu Nxumalo (35) said the woman was released on the day of the incident.
"She has since run away from her home and left the kids behind," said Gugu.
Captain Thulani Zwane said no case was opened.
"The victim was interviewed by Tongaat police. He didn't want to open a case until he is fully recovered," he said.
