News Update: Nelson Mandela has not been released from hospital despite claims that he had returned home.
The South African government said reports that the 95-year-old had been discharged were "incorrect".
"Madiba is still in hospital in Pretoria, and remains in a critical but stable condition," the presidency said in a statement.
His
lung infection dates back to his time at the notorious Robben Island,
where he and other prisoners were forced to work in a limestone quarry
at in Pretoria.
Mr Mandela stepped down as president in 1999 and
his last major public appearance was in July 2010, at the final of the
Fifa World Cup at Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg.
This is to update earlier story below that the former South African president had returned home.Nelson Mandela has returned to his home in Johannesburg after a long stay in hospital, his daughter has confirmed.
The former South African president was admitted to hospital in Pretoria on June 8 with a lung infection.
Last week the presidency said 95-year-old Mr Mandela was showing "great resilience" and that he was in a critical but stable condition.
Sky correspondent Emma Hurd, in Johannesburg, said Mr Mandela "effectively has a hospital ward" in his house so his team of doctors will be able to monitor him around the clock.
The ailing apartheid hero's daughter has not given an indication of how her father's health now is.
Hurd said she believes the news "will lift spirits" but will remind South Africans that the former leader will not go on forever.
The country's president Jacob Zuma has been urging people to pray for Madiba and keep him in their thoughts.
