Sangoma (traditional healer) Nwabisa Lamani's (50) on Sunday afternoon watched as an angry crowd stoned and burned her son with melted plastic.
Her son Mlamli (21) had been accused of robbing a 38-year-old man of his cellphone, wallet, ID, driver's licence and R1 200 in Govan Mbeki Township in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, SA.
Nwabisa told Daily Sun: "My son makes trouble because he's addicted to drugs.
"On Sunday afternoon, a sangoma, a woman and three men arrived at my home and accused my son of robbing a resident. My son said he didn't do it but they assaulted him anyway. He tried to hide in my wardrobe but they dragged him out and continued beating him.
"I threw myself over him to protect him but the sangoma assaulted me.
"These men stripped my son naked and took him away. They told me to come and watch them kill him."
All Nwabisa could do was stand in the street and pray for her son's life.
"It is not my wish for my son to be a criminal. For three years he has been giving me a headache."
Mlamli managed to escape from the crowd when he saw cops arrive in the veld where he was being beaten.
He ran with no clothes on and jumped into their van. He was then taken to Dora Nginza Hospital with severe injuries.
"I believe that one day God and my ancestors will help him change his bad ways," said Nwabisa.
