A Gokwe South petrol dealer and his wife are ruing their decision to assign their teenage daughter to clean spilt petrol as the girl died when she was burnt after she swept the petrol into the fireplace.
Police confirmed the incident which happened last Thursday at about 5pm in Chief Nemangwe's area.
The girl has been identified as 13-year-old Valerie Chitaunike.
Acting Midlands police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende said on the day in question, the petrol dealer, Amos Chitaunike (33) accidentally spilt petrol on the floor of his room.
"Chitaunike is a petrol dealer in Nemangwe. After he accidentally spilt petrol on the floor, Chitaunike advised his wife to clean the floor and he proceeded to Nemangwe Business Centre for work. Instead of cleaning, Chitaunike's wife, Edna, also instructed her daughter, Valerie to clean the floor. Edna proceeded to a neighbouring homestead leaving her child alone.
Valerie took a broom and swept the petrol out of the room onto the fire place resulting in the room catching fire and she got burnt in the process," she said.
Asst Insp Mukwende said Valerie screamed for help and her mother rushed to the home in a bid to rescue her.
She said members of the public managed to rescue Mrs Edna Chitaunike and her daughter and put out the fire.
"The two were rushed to Gokwe District Hospital for treatment. Valerie died the following day, on Friday while one her way to Gweru Provincial Hospital where she had been transferred for further treatment.
We appeal to members of the public not to keep flammable substances in their houses since they pose danger to human lives," said Asst Insp Mukwende.
