A man has been jailed for 10 months after shooting his girlfriend in the leg because of his "jealousy" over her use of Facebook.

Swansea Crown Court heard Scott Clark, 25, of Birchgrove, Swansea, punched Claire Thomas, struck her in the face with a Mother's Day mug then hit her with a pool cue before shooting her with a .22 calibre rifle.

Luckily, said Craig Jones, prosecuting, the pellet only grazed her leg and did not embed itself into it.

Mr Jones said the incident happened in March this year when the defendant found his girlfriend using Facebook over her mobile phone.

He said: "He didn't like her using Facebook or other social media as a result of the defendant's jealous approach to that area."

He said he took the phone off her and walked out into the street with it, his girlfriend demanding it back.

The prosecutor said: "He punched her to the right side of the face.

"He told her she could have the phone back if she went to a local shop and bought him four cans of lager from the local shop.

"She agreed to do it."

The prosecutor said an argument broke out later which resulted in Clark picking up a mug and striking his girlfriend across the face with it.

The court heard the mug had been bought for her on Mother's Day.

Clark suffered cuts to his hand when it broke and she sustained lacerations to the face.

The court heard Clark's girlfriend picked up a pool cue in self defence and he later hit her with it on the ankle and he finally picked up a .22 rifle and shot her in the lower left leg.

Clarke admitted offences of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault and criminal damage.

Dyfed Thomas, defending, said the defendant's girlfriend had visited him regularly while he was on remand for the offences and had "effectively forgiven him".

He added the defendant said much of what happened was in self defence.

Mr Thomas said of the complainant's forgiving attitude: "The effect of offences on a victim have to be a relevant factor."

But jailing Clark for a total of 10 months for all the offences, Judge Paul Thomas said: "Women for whatever reason return time and time again to a violent partner.

"And the court has a wider obligation than simply conforming to the wishes of women who, for whatever reason, often decide to forgive."
