A 22 year old Mishek Saurees Mine worker died when a shaft collapsed on him on Saturday.
Sandile Mabi died around 11 am at Climond area in Fort-Rixon, Zimbabwe.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson, Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident.
"We received a report of a man who died while panning for gold when the edges of the trench collapsed on him," said Insp Ndebele.
"The deceased's body was found by a co-worker who called other miners who went underground to dig up his body.
"The body was taken to Bulawayo Central Hospital for post-mortem," he said.
Insp Ndebele said investigations were still underway to ascertain what really transpired.
He urged miners to take precaution measures before going underground.
"Gold panners should not enter shafts which have no safety measures," he said.
It is reported that the shaft owned by Lust Dube had inadequate safety measures.
